With the new year on the horizon, many of us resolve to become fitter and healthier. Sometimes it’s hard the first few weeks after Christmas to get into a new routine, but once it becomes part of a daily habit, it’s easier to follow. Many enjoy the social connections that come from being in a fitness class, which nurture both the mind and body.
Trying a new fitness class with others can be just what you need in the winter months to boost your energy, improve sleep and have some fun.
The Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre, 775 Brealey Dr., can help you achieve your fitness goals with a range of programming for all ages and abilities.
“We all know the important connection that physical activity and fitness play in our overall health,” says Heather Stephens, Assistant Program and Facility Manager. “It’s especially important during this busy time of year. The centre is proud to offer a variety of programming for all ages and abilities. We look forward to helping to support your health and fitness goals in 2023!”
The centre continues to offer a variety of fitness classes for those aged 12 and over, with a mix of high intensity and low intensity options. Every week there are options such as Zumba, cycling, Low and Sculpt, Strength and Stretch, Bootcamp, Yoga Flow, Hatha Yoga, Full Body Strength and HIIT classes. The walking track is also available for those looking for indoor walking this winter. Registration is on now for group fitness programs starting the week of Jan. 9.
During the winter, some tend to stay inside and as a result, experience isolation. Exercising with others can help to improve one’s mood, reduce stress and make us feel happier and more relaxed.
The centre offers aqua fitness programs in the both the leisure and therapy pools.
“Both pools are considered warm pools and maintain temperatures of 81.9 degrees for the leisure pool and 91.9 degrees for the therapy pool,” she continues. “Join us for a great aquafit workout in either the shallow or deep end of the pool or enjoying the flowing movements and extended held stretches of Gentle Aqua and Aqua Yoga. Lane swimming is a great way to stay fit in 2023 by building endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness check out our lane swims online.”
Drop-in sports in the gym include pickleball, basketball, volleyball, badminton. Preregistered pickleball play times are available for recreational, intermediate and advanced levels. Pickleball clinics are also offered for beginners and those looking to improve their game. Drop-in sports in the gym or drop-in swims in one of the pools are $5 per person.
The Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre is a mask-friendly environment and those who are sick are encouraged to stay home. They continue to have enhanced cleaning protocols and members are provided with a cloth and spray bottle when they enter the facility to ensure that touch surfaces are disinfected for their safe use.
“We offer two swims on Saturday, Dec. 31 for families,” says Stephens. “The first one is the open swim from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and then the fun swim which has the water slide and water features will be from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.”
